Bennington is a town in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. It is one of two shire towns (county seats) of the county, the other being Manchester. As of the 2020 US Census, the population was 15,333. Bennington is the most populous town in southern Vermont, the second-largest town in Vermont (after Colchester) and the sixth-largest municipality in the state, including the cities of Burlington, Rutland, and South Burlington.
The town is home to the Bennington Battle Monument, which is the tallest human-made structure in the state of Vermont. The town has a long history of manufacturing, primarily within wood processing. The town is also recognized nationally for its pottery, iron, and textiles.
First of the New Hampshire Grants, Bennington was chartered on January 3, 1749, by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth and named in his honor. It was granted to William Williams and 61 others, mostly from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, making the town the oldest to be chartered in Vermont and outside of what is now New Hampshire, though Brattleboro had been settled earlier as a fort. The town was first settled in 1761 by four families from Hardwick and two from Amherst, Massachusetts. They were led by Capt. Samuel Robinson, who camped in the river valley on his return from the French and Indian War.

Landlocked in America’s Northeast, Vermont is the second smallest state in population but plays a decidedly impressive role in the nation’s freight logistics network. Characterized by lush green mountains, family-owned dairy farms, and rich manufacturing traditions, its strategic positioning – bordering Canada and primary U.S. marketplaces – makes it a prime venue for freight logistics.
Vermont is primarily served by two interstate highways, I-89 and I-91, which expedite the movement of LTL freight. The state’s robust road infrastructure, coupled with the use of modern GPS and routing technology, ensures that the flow of goods remains consistent and reliable, geographically connecting southern and northern New England while enabling easy access to major U.S. and international markets.
Given the state’s significant production of dairy, maple syrup, and specialty foods, it sees a considerable inbound and outbound freight flow. Specialized refrigerated LTL transportation is necessary for these perishable goods, further underlining Vermont’s critical role in the nation’s cold chain logistics.
Vermont’s commitment to efficient and sustainable freight logistics is also evident in multiple projects aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure. For instance, the Cross Vermont Trail, a planned 90-mile multi-modal trail, is designed to offer relief from traffic congestion, thereby improving freight-handling efficiency.
Vermont also hosts many freight-handling facilities because of the presence of key industry sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, and technology. These sectors necessitate frequent LTL freight transportation, with demands ranging from raw materials to tech components.
In summary, Vermont’s geographical location, excellent transportation infrastructure, diverse industries, and prioritization of freight logistics make it a focal point for any dynamic LTL freight network. Its role in this arena, though small given its size and population, is mighty, connecting commerce hubs and helping keep America’s supply chain wheels turning. In the context of seamless LTL freight transportation, Vermont sure packs a punch.
