Hudson is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, United States. It is located along the Massachusetts state line. The population was 25,394 at the 2020 census. It is the tenth-largest municipality (town or city) in the state, by population.
The urban center of town, where 7,534 people resided as of the 2020 census, is defined as the Hudson census-designated place (CDP) and is located at the junctions of New Hampshire routes 102, 111 and 3A, directly across the Merrimack River from the city of Nashua.
Hudson began as part of the Dunstable Land Grant that encompassed the current city of Nashua, New Hampshire, and the towns of Dunstable and Pepperell, Massachusetts, as well as parts of other nearby towns on both sides of the border. In 1732, all of Dunstable east of the Merrimack River became the town of Nottingham, Massachusetts. Nine years later, the northern boundary of Massachusetts was finally officially established, and the New Hampshire portion of Nottingham became Nottingham West, to avoid confusion with Nottingham, New Hampshire, to the northeast.
Nicknamed the Granite State, New Hampshire is a northeastern state known for its robust natural resources and significant manufacturing industry. Covering an area of over 9,000 square miles, New Hampshire provides an essential logistical link of LTL (Less Than Truckload) freight movement in the New England territory, particularly as it’s situated between the critical freight hubs of Boston, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine.
The state’s freight movement thrives on its extensive road network, with primary interstates I-93 and I-95 being pivotal arteries that facilitate the transport of goods in and out of the state. The positioning of New Hampshire makes it an essential passageway for distribution to highly populated areas in the Northeast, such as New York City and Philadelphia, but also its northern neighbors in Canada.
LTL freight in New Hampshire primarily supports its key industries, including machinery manufacturing, food production, electronic components and the prominent biotech sector. Efficiently moving these goods in less-than-truckload shipments is essential to maintaining the rhythm of these sectors and boosting the overall economic vitality of the state.
New Hampshire’s freight logistics system is further supported by its multiple intermodal facilities, especially its access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Portsmouth International Port. This seaport adds an extra layer of versatility to New Hampshire’s freight movement. It helps shippers to utilize different transport modes and achieve an efficient logistics solution.
Despite its small size, New Hampshire’s strategic location, well-maintained infrastructure, and diverse industrial sectors make it a vital player in the efficient movement of LTL freight across the northeastern United States. The state’s freight transportation system is constantly evolving to maintain and improve its productivity, ultimately serving as a backbone of New Hampshire’s economy and an asset to the entire North American freight network.
