Glendale is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. Located about nine miles northwest of the state capital Phoenix, Glendale is known for State Farm Stadium, which is the home of the Arizona Cardinals football team. The city also contains the Arrowhead Towne Center shopping mall. As of the 2020 census, Glendale had a population of 248,325.
In the late 1800s the area that is now Glendale was all desert. William John Murphy, a native of New Hartford, New York, who resided in the town of Flagstaff in what was then the territory of Arizona, was in charge of building the 40-mile-long (64 km) Arizona Canal from Granite Reef to New River for the Arizona Canal Company. In 1885, he completed the canal, which would bring water to the desert land. Murphy was deep in debt, since he had agreed to be paid in Arizona Canal Company stock and bonds and land instead of cash.
In 1887, Murphy formed the Arizona Improvement Company. His objective was to sell the land and water rights south of the canal. Murphy raised capital from out of state sources in order to meet payroll and construction expenses. Murphy decided to refer to this land as “Glendale”. In order to develop and interest potential investors and settlers in this new town, Murphy decided to provide a better way of access from Phoenix to Glendale and ending in the town of Peoria by building an 18-mile-long (29 km) diagonal road which he named Grand Avenue.
Arizona, located in the heart-land of the southwestern United States, offers a central hub for freight logistics within the region and to the West Coast. With major interstate highways like the I-10 and I-40 crisscrossing the state, it provides readily accessible routes for freight transport. Its proximity to the international border also facilitates trade with Mexico, adding a unique dynamic to the state’s freight logistics.
Particularly significant within Arizona’s freight industry is the Less Than Truckload (LTL) freight system. LTL shipping is a cost-effective type of ground freight transportation that combines shipments from multiple customers. Businesses can ship partial loads, taking advantage of the shared space, without the need to hire an entire truck for their goods alone. This approach can significantly reduce shipping costs while offering timely deliveries.
Arizona’s well-developed infrastructure caters efficiently to this kind of shipping. With various LTL centers and terminals spread across key cities like Phoenix and Tucson, and logistic hotspots like Flagstaff and Yuma, the state facilitates faster transfers, prompt deliveries and smooth last-mile connectivity. The state’s dry climate also ensures minimal weather-related disruptions, allowing for reliable year-round transportation.
Furthermore, Arizona’s growing economy, supported by key industries like manufacturing, technology, and agriculture, creates a consistent demand for LTL freight services. The consumption patterns within the state also contribute to the robust inbound and outbound freight activities.
Moreover, the state hosts multiple rail terminals and international airports, providing multimodal freight options and supporting the efficient movement of goods. Arizona is also home to a skilled workforce that is well-versed in freight logistics management, which contributes to the overall efficiency and reliability of LTL freight services.
Therefore, whether you’re considering intra-state, inter-state, or international freight movement, Arizona provides a strategic location, a conducive environment, and a robust LTL freight logistics system that effectively supports the seamless transportation of goods.
